One Punch Can Kill 

On Tuesday 8^th of May, we welcomed Caterina Politi to Scoresby Secondary College. We were given the opportunity for Caterina to talk to us about street violence and the dangers of one single punch. During her speech she spoke about a tragedy that occurred in 2012, where she lost her 22 year old son, David Cassai, in an unprovoked ambush. 

As months went by Caterina mentions how she fought for stricter laws on the damages of one punch. Around the time the laws changed for one punch deaths to be charged with manslaughter and the minimum years in jail is now 10 years. She didn’t stop there, she moves on talking about the fight to put more cameras in Rye, Mornington Peninsula. Where David lost his life that on the other side of the road there were no cameras. Fast forward 5 years, the Mornington Peninsula Shire has installed 13 new cameras in the Rye pier/ foreshore/car park area and all visions will live stream to Rosebud Police Station.

Caterina shared a video about David Cassai, showing the memories he shared with his close friends and family members. Caterina spoke of her reason for visiting schools which is to talk to students, schools and other groups to persuade the younger generations that it’s always easier to walk away because we lose something. Which could be 10 years of our lives or it could be the fact that we will always be remembered by Google or our close family and friends.

In the speech, we all learnt a valuable lesson and that was ‘It’s easier to just walk away than to ruin your life or a stranger's.

Highlights of Term 1

Term 1 is always the quickest term but always feel like the most successful. 
The students planned and ran a fundraiser in under six weeks, they raised more than $1,200. They have collected and sorted through 20 boxes of clothing. The Salvation Army is in the process of printing out certificates to give to the students for all of their hard work in raising funds.

Student Profile of the Week

Our fourth profile of the year is:

DANIEL HOWL 

Daniel is one of our Year 12 VCAL students, he is an active student within the class. He always brings his charming demeanor to the classroom. He loves his go kart and anything to do with racing. 

Daniel is currently studying at Ringwood Training in a Certificate 3 in Trade Facility (RTTF). He knows that he would like to do something with V8 cars in the future. 
He does not have a favourite movie but his favourite Tv show is 'Teen Titans Go' and 'Weekdays Commodore Drifting' and his favourite food is Maccas.

Daniel looks forward to school every day and forming new friendships with his peers and teachers. He also enjoys his VET course as he has the opportunity to learn more about V8 cars. 

In the future Daniel aims to be either working on V8 cars or driving in the V8 Supercar's. He loves nothing more than racing his cars and wishes with all his might that he can do it in the future.

Public Safety Certificate

On Tuesday, the students had another opportunity to work besides Tim. They revisited the fire hose rolling competition. How long does it take them to roll up a full hose? The winning team was Brock, Daniel and Nathan with an amazing score of 5 minutes and 40 seconds. 
After the competition they played a game where they were required to push a soccer ball around two sets of cones with the water from the hose. 
They were given the opportunity ti learn the controls on the fire truck and how to change the hoses over when it was needed. 
They look forward to every week with new skills for them to learn. 

Student Profile of the Week

Our third profile of the week is:

MARIE CAPON PITTORINO

Marie is one of our Year 12 VCAL students, she is a quiet achiever. She always brings a smile to the classroom and her unique personality. Marie has the ability to think outside of the box. 

Marie is currently studying a Certificate 3 in Music. She is not quite sure what she would like to do but she knows it is something within the music industry. 
Her favourite movie is 'Before I Wake' her favourite TV show is 'Daria'. She listens to a wide range of music and does not like to limit her choices. Marie is not a fussy eater and has not favourite food as she enjoys all food. 

Marie looks forward to every Wednesday for the opportunity to complete her VET course, she enjoys everything there is to do with music. 

In the future Marie aims to either be a Recording Producer or an Art Therapist. As she believes that through music it can help to heal the soul. 

I asked Marie for her favourite quote and what picture does she believe define her. Her response is one of my favourites. "I don't let anything define me, I'm free to everything"

Homeless Fundraiser

After the VCAL students were given a tour around the city from the Salvation Army and they heard about the 105,237 people who sleep rough every night. They knew they wanted to do something to support the people who sleep rough every night. The VCAL students organised for a sausage sizzle and baked cupcakes to sell in order to raise funds for the Homeless. 

Below are some photos and a brief summary from the students on what they did for the day. 

We would like to thank the whole school for supporting the VCAL sausage sizzle, clothing drive and bake sale fundraiser which we held recently. We all had a lot of fun finding recipes and baking cupcakes in Home Economics. We sorted through your generous clothing donations, filling 20 boxes, all of which will be donated to the Salvation Army who will distribute them to the less fortunate within our community. We are proud to say that we raised over $1200 as a school. It makes us extremely happy to help the people that need it most in our community.

Student Profile of the Week

Our second profile of the week is:

RYAN BOOTH 

Ryan is one of our Year 12 students, he is always eager to participate in class and enjoying hands on activities. He was one the students who helped put together the pond last year (see photos further below) 

Ryan is currently studying a certificate 2 in Building Construction. He aims to be a builder in the future. 
His favourite movie/tv show/music/food are 'The Room', 'Rick and Morty', he does not have any favourite music but his favourite food is a meat. He loves nothing more than eating a steak after a long day of school.
Ryan cannot wait to leave school and begin his future career in building and construction.
What does he want in the future: Ryan aims to complete his apprenticeship and start working full time. He aims to start his own business and become a successful builder and household name.
